City guide

What’s special in District 7 / Phú Mỹ Hưng: Korean town, Crescent Mall, family living and RMIT

Phú Mỹ Hưng is the planned city the Taiwanese CT&D group started building on marshland in the 1990s: wide boulevards, a crescent lake, gated apartment blocks and a school on every second corner. It became Vietnam’s largest Korean community and its main Japanese and Taiwanese family quarter. Since 1 July 2025 old District 7 is four wards: Tân Mỹ (Sky Garden, the Korean streets, Crescent Mall), Tân Phú (FV Hospital, SSIS, Riverpark, the Japanese and Taipei schools), Tân Hưng (the Nguyễn Văn Linh–Nguyễn Hữu Thọ corridor, Himlam) and Tân Thuận (the export-processing zone and the port side).

Character

Flat, green, orderly and car-friendly by Saigon standards — the only district where families cycle. The Crescent (Hồ Bán Nguyệt) with Crescent Mall and the Starlight bridge, SC VivoCity, Lotte Mart, the Vivo and Riverside promenades, RMIT University’s main campus, and the K-town grid of Phạm Văn Nghị / Phạm Thái Bường where Korean BBQ, hagwons, churches and clinics line the blocks. It is 25–40 minutes from District 1 and feels like a different, quieter city.

Who lives here

Korean families of Samsung, LG, Hyundai, Lotte and their suppliers; Japanese families near the Japanese School; Taiwanese business families near the Taipei School; Americans at SSIS; RMIT staff; and Vietnamese upper-middle-class families. The Korean community has its own newspapers, supermarkets, clinics and Saturday schools.

See schools and healthcare.

Food and after work

K-town for BBQ, fried chicken, soju and noraebang until 02:00; Japanese izakaya on Phạm Văn Nghị; Taiwanese bubble tea and hot pot; Crescent Mall and SC VivoCity for cinemas and chains. The lake promenade at 18:00 is the family hour. Nightlife beyond K-town is thin — District 1 is a 30-minute Grab.

Engineer’s tip

Phú Mỹ Hưng is the natural base for the southern belt — Tân Thuận EPZ (Nidec, Furukawa, Sonion), Hiệp Phước and Long Hậu — and for Korean and Japanese plant managers whose families need their national school. Company shuttles to VSIP and the Hi-Tech Park leave Crescent Mall at 06:15. Our rental stock reaches Tân Thuận and Hiệp Phước the same day; torque tools for the EPZ lines are on the torque-control page. Tân Thuận has an on-site customs office, so 0% VAT export-processing invoices are routine — see the procurement guide.

Risks

  • Tidal flooding outside the planned core: Trần Xuân Soạn (Tân Thuận ward), Huỳnh Tấn Phát (Phú Thuận), Phạm Hữu Lầu (Tân Mỹ) and Nguyễn Văn Linh underpasses are on the city’s list; the Nhà Bè–Trần Xuân Soạn corridor is a priority hotspot to 2027. Phú Mỹ Hưng’s own streets are raised and usually dry.
  • Traffic: Nguyễn Hữu Thọ and the Kênh Tẻ bridge at 07:00–08:30, Nguyễn Văn Linh trucks to the port, Huỳnh Tấn Phát containers.
  • Land subsidence and older blocks: check for cracks and lift maintenance in 20-year-old buildings.
  • Distance: 60–140 minutes to the eastern and northern parks — choose it only if the plant is south or the school decides.
