Getting around Ho Chi Minh City: Grab, Xanh SM, motorbike licences, metro, buses and shuttles
Ho Chi Minh City moves on roughly 9 million registered motorbikes, a growing fleet of electric taxis, one metro line and a bus network most expats never try. For an engineer the questions are practical: which app, whether you may legally ride a motorbike, whether the metro reaches your plant, and how the company shuttle fits in. Here is the 2025–2026 answer.
Ride-hailing: Grab, Xanh SM, Be

Surge pricing kicks in during the 17:00–19:00 rain window and after 22:00. Pay by card in-app; add a tip only for luggage or a long wait.
Motorbikes: the 2025 rules
The Law on Road Traffic Order and Safety and Decree 168/2024 took effect on 1 January 2025 and are enforced. Key points for foreigners:
- Vietnam recognises only 1968 Vienna Convention international driving permits, used together with your national licence. IDPs issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention (USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and others) are not valid.
- An A1 licence (or its IDP equivalent) now covers motorbikes up to 125 cc only (previously 175 cc). A Honda SH 150 or Air Blade 160 needs the higher A class.
- Riding without a valid licence: 2–4 million VND fine under 125 cc, 6–8 million VND over 125 cc, with the bike impounded; cars 18–20 million VND. Repeat offences go on a national record that can affect visa and work-permit renewals.
- Zero alcohol tolerance, helmets always, no phone in hand. Insurance is void without a valid licence — check your international health policy’s exclusion clause.
- Converting a foreign licence to a Vietnamese one takes 5–10 working days at the HCMC transport authority with a TRC, translated licence and health certificate; many FDI staff do it in month two.
Honest advice: most plant engineers on a 12-month posting do not ride. A GrabBike for short hops and the company car for the plant is cheaper than one accident.
Metro Line 1 (Bến Thành–Suối Tiên)
- Open since 22 December 2024; 14 stations, 19.7 km, about 30 minutes end to end; 05:00–22:00, trains every 8–12 minutes; roughly 56,000 riders a day in 2025.
- Stations that matter for FDI staff: Bến Thành and Opera House (District 1), Ba Son, Văn Thánh (Bình Thạnh), Tân Cảng (Landmark 81), Thảo Điền, An Phú, Rạch Chiếc, Phước Long, Bình Thái, Thủ Đức, Hi-Tech Park, Suối Tiên (Vietnam National University, Vinhomes Grand Park feeder), and the Long Bình depot end.
- Fares 7,000–20,000 VND per trip (6,000–19,000 cashless), 40,000 VND day pass, 300,000 VND monthly. Buy with the HURC app, bank cards at the gate, or paper tickets.
- Feeder buses (5,000 VND) connect each eastern station to Vinhomes Grand Park, Linh Trung EPZ and the Hi-Tech Park gates.
Buses
Fares 5,000–7,000 VND, cashless payment via card and app since 2025, routes on the BusMap app. Useful lines: 109 (airport–Bến Thành, 15,000 VND), 152 (airport–Bến Thành, 5,000 VND), 08 and 19 to the Hi-Tech Park and Vietnam National University, 61-x routes to Bình Dương. Slow but safe; not a daily commute option for most expats.
Company shuttles to the parks
Every large plant in VSIP, Amata, Saigon Hi-Tech Park and Long Thành runs staff shuttles (16–45 seats) with fixed pick-up points — typically Thảo Điền (Masteri / Metro station), District 1 (Bến Thành or the office), Phú Mỹ Hưng (Crescent Mall) and Thủ Đức. Expect a 06:15–06:45 departure for a 07:30 shift and a 17:00–17:30 return; managers usually get a car and driver instead. Ask HR for the shuttle map before choosing an apartment; it decides your neighbourhood more than anything else on this page.
Car with driver
A full-time driver with a 7-seat costs the company roughly USD 900–1,400 a month including fuel and tolls; hourly hire through Grab Rent or local firms runs 150,000–250,000 VND per hour. Foreigners may buy a car but need the TRC and a Vietnamese licence to register and drive it.
FAQ — transport
Can I ride a motorbike in Vietnam on my home licence?
Only with a 1968-Convention international driving permit plus your national licence, and only up to 125 cc on an A1-class permit. 1949-Convention IDPs (USA, Canada, Australia) are not accepted. Verify with your embassy.
Grab or Xanh SM?
Both work well. Grab has more drivers and the bike option; Xanh SM has fixed tariffs, new electric cars and no surge — useful in rain. Keep both apps.
Does the metro go to Saigon Hi-Tech Park?
Yes — the Hi-Tech Park and Suối Tiên stations are on Line 1; from there a feeder bus or shuttle covers the last 10–25 minutes to Samsung, Intel, Nidec or Jabil gates.
How much is a monthly transport budget without a bike?
Roughly 3–6 million VND (USD 120–240) a month of Grab and Xanh SM rides for a District 1 or Thảo Điền resident, plus a 300,000 VND metro pass if you live on the line.
Are company shuttles normal?
Yes. Most FDI plants in VSIP, Amata and the Hi-Tech Park run daily shuttles from Thảo Điền, District 1, Phú Mỹ Hưng and Thủ Đức; managers usually get a car and driver.
