Rent-to-own test equipment in Vietnam: rental payments become purchase credit
Rent-to-own at Lost in HCM lets you rent a Keysight, Tektronix, Rohde & Schwarz, Fluke or Rigol instrument from local stock today and, if you decide to keep it, convert part of the rent you have already paid into credit against the purchase price — indicatively up to 50% of rental paid within the first six months. You get the instrument in days instead of the six-to-ten-week import wait, and the decision to buy is made after the line has proven its utilisation, not before.

How the purchase credit works
Every monthly or quarterly rental can be flagged “rent-to-own” on the quote. From that point, a share of each rental payment is tracked as purchase credit. When you convert, the credit is deducted from the agreed purchase price of the instrument. The figures below are indicative; the exact percentage, cap and price basis are stated on your rent-to-own quote.
| Month you convert | Indicative credit | Worked example (rental USD 1,000/month, purchase price USD 12,000) |
|---|---|---|
| Months 1–3 | Up to 50% of rental paid | USD 3,000 paid → USD 1,500 credit → USD 10,500 balance |
| Months 4–6 | Up to 50% of rental paid | USD 6,000 paid → USD 3,000 credit → USD 9,000 balance |
| Months 7–12 | Reducing, e.g. 30% of total rental paid | USD 12,000 paid → USD 3,600 credit → USD 8,400 balance |
| After month 12 | By new quotation | Switch to a long-term rental rate or buy at the then-current price |
- Price basis. You can buy the unit you have been using (as rented, with a fresh ISO/IEC 17025 certificate, at a used-equipment price) or a new factory unit with full manufacturer warranty at the current list price; both options are shown on the conversion quote.
- What the credit covers. The instrument and the options rented with it. Delivery, calibration surcharges, loaner days and VAT are not credited.
- Not refundable as cash. Credit is only usable against a purchase from Lost in HCM and is not transferable between instruments unless agreed on the quote.
- Terms that qualify. Monthly and quarterly rentals. Weekly rentals are not credited, but a weekly rental extended into a monthly term starts earning credit from the first full month.
When rent-to-own makes sense
- Project becomes a permanent line. The oscilloscope rented for NPI or PPAP stays on the station after SOP; convert instead of renting for a second year.
- CAPEX approval is pending. Head office needs a quarter to approve the fixed-asset request; rent now, buy when the PO lands, and recover part of the rent.
- Import lead time is on the critical path. A configured Keysight or R&S order takes six to ten weeks door-to-door in Vietnam; rent the same class today and convert when the utilisation is proven. See the procurement and import guide.
- Utilisation is unknown during ramp-up. Our pricing page rule: if you will use the instrument fewer than about 12 weeks in the next 12 months, plain rental is cheaper. Above that, rent-to-own keeps the exit open both ways.
When plain rental is the better choice
- One-off audits, EMC pre-compliance runs, commissioning and shutdowns shorter than a month.
- Instruments whose specification will change before you buy (for example bandwidth upgrades on scopes).
- Calibration loaners — these are day-rate rentals; see calibration loaner equipment.
Eligible brands and instruments
Rent-to-own is available on instruments from Keysight, Tektronix, Rohde & Schwarz, Fluke and Rigol across the rental fleet — oscilloscopes, spectrum and signal analyzers, signal generators, network analyzers, digital multimeters, DC power supplies, electronic loads, thermal cameras, calibrators and power-quality analyzers. Probes, cables and other accessories rented with the instrument are included in the purchase at the used-equipment price. Torque testers used during a torque control program qualify as well; see torque control.
Steps
| Step | What happens | Typical timing |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Request a quote | Send the model, term and delivery address and tick “rent-to-own” on the quote form; the quote shows the rental rate, indicative credit schedule and both purchase-price bases | Within 1 working day |
| 2. Rent | Sign the rental agreement, receive the instrument with its ISO/IEC 17025 certificate and a VAT e-invoice per period; credit accrues monthly | Delivery in 1–2 working days in the south |
| 3. Decide | At any month-end, ask for a conversion quote: credit earned, balance due for the used unit or a new unit | Any time in the first 12 months |
| 4. Convert | Pay the balance; the rental agreement closes and a sales VAT e-invoice, CO/CQ (new units), asset-transfer minutes and a fresh calibration certificate are issued | Within 5 working days of the PO |
| 5. Own | Warranty and calibration reminders continue through the same account manager; the next calibration can be coordinated via loaner instruments | Ongoing |
Ownership paperwork for FDI companies
The conversion is invoiced as a sale to your Vietnamese entity with a VAT e-invoice (hóa đơn điện tử) carrying your tax code, so finance can capitalise the asset. New units come with CO/CQ and the manufacturer warranty; used units come with our warranty period and the as-left calibration data. For export-processing enterprises the sale can be treated as an on-the-spot export at 0% VAT with the paperwork prepared alongside your customs broker.
FAQ — rent-to-own
- How much of the rent is credited toward the purchase?Indicatively up to 50% of rental paid within the first six months, reducing afterwards. The exact percentage, cap and price basis are stated on your rent-to-own quote and depend on the instrument, term and options.
- Do I have to buy at the end?No. Rent-to-own is an option, not an obligation. If you never convert, the rental simply ends when you return the instrument and the credit lapses.
- Can I buy a new unit instead of the one I rented?Yes. The conversion quote shows both: the rented unit at a used-equipment price with a fresh ISO/IEC 17025 certificate, or a new factory unit with full manufacturer warranty at the current list price. The same credit applies to either.
- Can the credit be moved to a different model?Only if agreed on the quote, for example when you rent a 200 MHz oscilloscope and buy the 500 MHz version of the same family. Moving credit between brands or instrument classes is not standard.
- Can our parent company pay for the purchase in USD?Rental and purchase are invoiced to your Vietnamese entity in VND on a VAT e-invoice. A USD quotation for head-office approval is provided on request; export sales to a parent company abroad are handled case by case.
