What’s special in District 5 / Chợ Lớn: Chinatown, wholesale markets and the Chinese–Taiwanese community
Chợ Lớn (“big market”) was a separate Chinese city until 1931 and still behaves like one: Cantonese, Teochew and Hokkien temples, guild halls, herbal-medicine streets, and the wholesale markets that supply half the shops in southern Vietnam. Since 1 July 2025 old District 5 is three wards — Chợ Lớn (the western core with Bình Tây market’s edge, Thiên Hậu temple and Kim Biên), An Đông (An Đông market, Windsor Plaza, the Taiwanese hotels) and Chợ Quán (the eastern side with the university hospitals). For an engineer it is the district of components, chemicals, packaging and the public tertiary hospitals.

Who lives here
Ethnic-Chinese (Hoa) Vietnamese families, Taiwanese and mainland Chinese traders and factory owners who use the Windsor Plaza / An Đông hotels and serviced apartments, Chinese-speaking managers of textile, plastics and packaging plants in Bình Chánh and Long An, and medical staff of Chợ Rẫy and the University Medical Center. Few Western expats — most Taiwanese families with children choose Phú Mỹ Hưng for the Taipei School.

- Serviced apartments and hotel residences around An Đông / Windsor Plaza and Nguyễn Trãi: studio/1BR 450–800; 2BR 700–1,200 — Chinese-speaking reception is common.
- Newer towers (Everrich Infinity, The Everrich 1, Tản Đà Court): 2BR 800–1,400; 3BR 1,200–1,900.
- Shophouses and old apartments: 300–700, cash, often used by traders as live-work space.
Schools and hospitals
Chợ Rẫy — the largest public hospital in the south — and the University Medical Center (UMC) are both here, with VIP wings and the best specialists for trauma, cardiology and complex surgery; the Hùng Vương maternity and Nhi Đồng 1 children’s hospitals are minutes away. International clinics are in District 1 (15 minutes). No international schools; the Taipei School and the Chinese-stream bilingual schools are in District 7, 30–40 minutes. Food and after work
Dim sum on Hà Tôn Quyền and at the Windsor’s Ngân Đình, roast duck and char siu on Nguyễn Trãi, Teochew porridge and hủ tiếu in the Chợ Lớn alleys, herbal tea and chè at Hồ Thị Kỷ’s cousin markets, and Chinese-language karaoke around An Đông. Evenings are early — the district sleeps by 22:00 outside the hotels.

Kim Biên market (Vạn Tượng street, Chợ Lớn ward) is the wholesale source for industrial chemicals, solvents, adhesives, packaging film and, in the surrounding shops, electronic components, cable, switches and power tools — with a Hoa trading network that can source almost anything from Guangzhou within a week. Buy consumables here; buy calibrated instruments with certificates and VAT invoices from rental stock or through the procurement guide. Labels are often Chinese-only; bring a photo of the exact part.
Risks
- Traffic: Hồng Bàng, Nguyễn Trãi and the Nguyễn Văn Cừ bridge approach at peak; delivery trucks around Kim Biên and An Đông from 05:00.
- Flooding is moderate; Hồng Bàng near Cây Gõ and the streets by the Tàu Hủ canal pond in storms.
- Chemical storage at Kim Biên is a known fire hazard; the city plans to relocate the chemical trade — avoid apartments directly above the market.
- Counterfeit components: verify part markings and buy critical semiconductors from authorised distributors.
