Southern Vietnam has no shortage of technical people. It has a shortage of technical people who can read a specification in English, follow a written procedure, and stay for three years. Foreign-invested plants in Ho Chi Minh City, Bình Dương and Đồng Nai compete for the same graduates as Samsung, Intel, Nidec, Bosch and a hundred electronics suppliers, and the ones that hire well are not the ones that pay the most. This is what works.
Where the people actually come from
Engineers come out of a small number of schools, and hiring managers here know them by reputation. Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (Bách Khoa, part of VNU-HCM) is the strongest general engineering school in the south. HCMC University of Technology and Education (Sư phạm Kỹ thuật) produces very practical electrical, electronic and mechatronics graduates. The Industrial University (IUH) and the University of Science supply chemistry, materials and instrumentation people. For technicians rather than engineers, Cao Thắng Technical College and Lý Tự Trọng College have been feeding the city’s factories for decades, and each industrial province runs vocational colleges tied to the parks.
Two practical consequences. First, campus relationships pay off: a final-year internship programme costs little and gives you a filtered pipeline a year ahead. Second, a technician from a good vocational college is often a better hire than a weak engineering graduate for line, test and maintenance work, and costs meaningfully less.
Channels, in the order they work
- Referrals from your own staff. The highest-quality channel in Vietnam by a wide margin. Pay a referral bonus in two parts, at joining and after six months.
- Job boards. VietnamWorks, TopCV and CareerBuilder Vietnam cover engineering and technician roles; ITviec is the one that matters for software and embedded. Post in Vietnamese with an English job title.
- Facebook groups and Zalo groups for technicians and maintenance staff by province. Unglamorous, and where shift-level hiring actually happens.
- Headhunters for managers and scarce specialists. Expect a fee of roughly one and a half to two and a half months of the candidate’s salary, payable on joining with a replacement guarantee. Negotiate the guarantee period, not only the fee.
- LinkedIn for management and for candidates already working at multinationals. Less useful below supervisor level.
What you will pay
The figures below are indicative monthly gross salaries in Ho Chi Minh City in 2026, before insurance and bonus, for foreign-invested employers. Bình Dương and Đồng Nai typically sit five to fifteen percent below the city. Benchmark twice a year, because electronics and semiconductor pay moves quickly.
| Role | Indicative gross per month |
|---|---|
| Technician, fresh from vocational college | USD 350 – 550 |
| Experienced technician, maintenance or test | USD 500 – 900 |
| Engineer, 0 – 2 years | USD 600 – 1,000 |
| Test, process or quality engineer, 3 – 5 years | USD 900 – 1,600 |
| Senior or lead engineer | USD 1,500 – 2,500 |
| Engineering or quality manager | USD 2,500 – 4,500 |
Two premiums are real: solid technical English adds roughly twenty to thirty percent, and working Japanese or Korean adds more than that in the plants that need it. A thirteenth-month salary around Tết is customary rather than legally required, and candidates will assume it unless you say otherwise.
On top of gross salary, budget for compulsory insurance contributions: the employer share is commonly around twenty-one and a half percent of the insured salary, with about ten and a half percent deducted from the employee, plus a trade-union contribution. Rates, caps and the regional minimum wage are adjusted periodically, so have your accountant confirm the current numbers before you build the payroll model.

Contracts, probation and notice
Under the Labour Code 2019, probation is capped by role: up to 180 days for an enterprise manager, up to 60 days for positions requiring a college degree or higher, up to 30 days for intermediate vocational roles and no more than six working days for simple work. Probation pay must be at least 85 percent of the full rate. Contracts are either indefinite-term or definite-term of up to 36 months; a definite-term contract can normally be renewed once, after which it becomes indefinite. Employees may resign with notice, commonly 45 days on an indefinite contract and 30 days on a definite one. Standard working time is eight hours a day and 48 hours a week, with overtime capped monthly and annually. Treat all of this as the shape of the rules and confirm the detail with a Vietnamese employment lawyer before you write your handbook.
Why people leave, and what keeps them
Resignations cluster in the four weeks after Tết, once the thirteenth-month payment has landed. That is not disloyalty, it is the calendar: it is when everyone compares offers. Plan February hiring capacity in advance and do your retention conversations in December, not March.
What holds a technical team together here is fairly consistent across the plants we visit:
- A commute that works. For factory sites in Bình Dương and Đồng Nai, a shuttle bus is not a perk, it is a recruitment requirement. In the city, being twenty minutes closer beats a small raise.
- English training paid by the company. The cheapest loyalty programme in Vietnam, and it raises the value of the person to you at the same time.
- A visible next step. Technician to senior technician to line lead. Write the ladder down; many local employers do not, and it differentiates you.
- Real equipment and real training. Engineers leave jobs where they cannot practise their trade. Getting instruments on the bench in the first month, rented if necessary, matters more to a new engineer than an office chair.
- Managers who explain rather than instruct. Direct public criticism costs you people here; corrections work better one to one.
A hiring sequence that works for a new site
Hire an administrator or office manager who handles Vietnamese paperwork first, then one senior technical person, and let those two help you hire everyone else. Interview in a mix of Vietnamese and English so you see the real technical level rather than the language level, and give a short practical exercise: read this drawing, find the fault, explain this measurement. Check references by phone, since written references are rare. Then move fast, because good candidates in Ho Chi Minh City usually hold more than one offer.
FAQ
How long does it take to hire an engineer in Ho Chi Minh City?
Typically four to eight weeks from posting to start date: two to three weeks of sourcing and interviews, then the candidate’s notice period, which is commonly 30 to 45 days.
Do we have to pay a thirteenth-month salary?
It is customary rather than statutory. Most foreign-invested employers pay it around Tết, and candidates will assume it is included unless the offer says otherwise.
How much do employer insurance contributions add?
Commonly around twenty-one and a half percent of the insured salary on the employer side, plus a trade-union contribution, with roughly ten and a half percent deducted from the employee. Rates and caps change periodically, so confirm current figures with your accountant.
Should we hire engineers or technicians?
Both, in the right proportion. For test, maintenance and line work a strong vocational-college technician often outperforms a weak engineering graduate and costs less; keep engineers for process, quality and design ownership.
Is it cheaper to hire in Bình Dương or Đồng Nai than in the city?
Usually five to fifteen percent cheaper for equivalent roles, but the talent pool is thinner for senior and English-speaking positions, and you will need transport arrangements.

While you build the team
A new engineer with no instruments cannot start. Lost in HCM rents test equipment from local stock with next-day delivery, sells tools and new instruments, and handles the rest of the landing: housing, POSM printing, exhibitions and market analysis.
